SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Rev. Dr. John Q. Owens Jr.; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Rev. Owens served in the U.S. Army during World
5War II; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Rev. Owens, a prolific preacher-teacher, became a
7connectional officer in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME)
8Church and served as a pastor for 40 years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Rev. Owens pastored at Bethel AME Church in
10Madison for over 20 years, where he served faithfully with
11perfect attendance alongside his wife, Dr. Dorothy Owens; he
12retired under Bishop John R. Bryant (Ret.); and
 
13    WHEREAS, Rev. Owens and his wife previously served at
14three other churches for a combined 20 years before joining
15Bethel AME Church; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Rev. Owens served as the social action
17director/consultant for the AME Church, following the
18transitioning of Dr. Leroy Nesbit in South Africa, and as a
19member of the church's general board meeting for 16 years; and

1    WHEREAS, Rev. Owens will be remembered for his leadership,
2guidance, and teachings; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
5Rev. Dr. John Q. Owens Jr. and extend our sincere condolences
6to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
7it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of Rev. Owens as an expression of our
10deepest sympathy.
