SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Penny Miller of Sarasota, Florida,
4formerly of Evanston, who passed away on July 13, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Penny Miller was born in Millerville, Minnesota to
6Roman and Crescentia (Wilken) Miller in 1943; she graduated
7from Waukegan Township High School; she attended Loyola
8University in Rome, Italy and graduated from Marquette
9University; she received her master's degree from Northern
10Illinois University; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Penny Miller was a dedicated teacher and mentor
12during her 36-year teaching career at West Elementary and
13Washington Elementary Schools in Waukegan; she served as a
14Union Representative and earned a Teacher of the Year Award;
15she was a member of the Lake County Retired Teachers
16Association and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Penny Miller was active in several organizations,
18including the Evanston Housing Commission, the Southeast
19Evanston Association, and the Evanston Property Owners
20Association; in the early 1980s, she and Ashraf received an
21Evanston Preservation Award for the rehabilitation of a
22condemned house; a proud feminist, she was a founding member of

1the Waukegan Chapter of the National Organization for Women;
2she was also a member of the Jane Collective in the early
31970s; she enjoyed traveling, learning, reading, trying to
4golf, retirement, her family, and her friends, especially the
5Grapes; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Penny Miller was preceded in death by her parents;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Penny Miller is survived by her partner, Richard
9Hershman; her brothers, Michael (Patricia Berry) Miller and
10Jonathan Miller; her nieces and nephews, Stacy Mahoney, Nicole
11Miller, and Ed Stevenson; her great-nieces and great-nephews,
12Lily, Susie, and Margee Mahoney and Brendon, Alex, Nate, and
13Carly Crescentia Stevenson; her former husband, Ashraf Manji;
14and many friends and relatives; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Penny Miller and extend our sincere condolences to her family,
18friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Penny Miller as an expression of our
21deepest sympathy.
