HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Kathryn
4Williams Timmes of Peoria, who passed away on October 8, 2019;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes was born in Ashland, Kentucky to
7Almira and Willie Williams on January 10, 1931; she attended
8high school at the Swift Memorial Institute, a private boarding
9school in Rogersville, Tennessee; her undergraduate education
10was at Bennett College, an all-girls, historically-black
11college in Greensboro, North Carolina; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes began her career teaching fourth
13grade in New York City; after a few years, she moved to Peoria
14and worked at the Carver Center; after a year, she taught at
15the Spalding Institute and the Academy of Our Lady; she then
16began her 50-year career with District 150 and taught at
17Douglas Elementary School and counseled students at Manual and
18Woodruff High Schools; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes was the first president of the
20Heritage Ensemble and a charter member of Delta Sigma Theta
21Sorority, Peoria Alumnae Chapter; she had many
22accomplishments, but her greatest pride and joy was her role as

1a wife, mother, and daughter; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes was a founding member of Leader
3Gordon-Booth's Kitchen Cabinet, a group of smart, fierce,
4loving women from the community that saw promise and talent in
5a young 24-year-old woman who wanted to serve her community;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes was preceded in death by her
8husband of 59 years, John Timmes, and her daughter, Janique
9"Jan"; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Kathryn Timmes is survived by her daughter,
11Johnna; her closest sister-girlfriend, Jeanne St. Julian; and
12numerous extended family members, church members, neighbors,
13friends, former students, and colleagues; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we mourn the passing of Kathryn Williams Timmes and extend our
17sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
18and loved her; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Kathryn Timmes as an expression of
21our deepest sympathy.
