HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Cindy McCuen on the
4occasion of her retirement on June 30, 2019, after over 43
5years of dedicated service as the Support Staff Administrator
6for the House Democratic Research/Appropriations Staff of the
7Illinois House of Representatives; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Cindy McCuen was born in Des Moines, Iowa to
9Charles "Chick" and Jane McCuen; Chick's work as a former
10television and radio newscaster in Iowa took his family and
11toddler, Cindy, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he became the
12first news director at WCCO-TV; in the early 1960s, Chick was
13hired by WMAQ-NBC in Chicago as a reporter and news anchor,
14which led to the McCuen family moving to Winnetka, Illinois;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Cindy McCuen attended Skokie Junior High in
17Winnetka, Illinois and graduated from New Trier High School in
181966; she continued her education at the University of Kansas,
19where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts; before starting
20her career with the Illinois General Assembly, she worked in
21Lawrence, Kansas for the Head Start Program, where she designed
22and created children's reading books; and

1    WHEREAS, Cindy McCuen is the proud mother of Matthew Thomas
2McCuen, who was born in Springfield, Illinois in 1992; as a
3single mother, she worked hard to give her son the world while
4balancing her hours at the Illinois General Assembly; as a
5testimony, Matthew received his Bachelor of Science from
6Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and now works in St.
7Louis, Missouri as a mechanical engineer; he plans to marry
8Taylor McDermott in October 2019; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Cindy McCuen shares a close bond with her two
10sisters, Mary Calgren of Edina, Minnesota and Joanie Wexler of
11Oak Brook, Illinois; she misses her mother Jane McCuen, fondly
12described as a fun and loving homemaker who worked tirelessly
13raising her three daughters; Cindy proudly boasts that they
14never had a fight; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Cindy McCuen also misses her father who was, in
16addition to being a scrappy news reporter, an avid scrabble
17player and clever story teller, who told tales encompassing
18countless news accounts and theories after covering the 1968
19Chicago riots, the Richard Speck murder trial, U.S. Senator
20Charles Percy's daughter's murder, and the statehouse in
21Springfield, Illinois; and
 
22    WHEREAS, During her tenure, Cindy McCuen has worked with
23over 100 staffers, providing guidance, patiently assisting,

1and answering every question brought to her; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Cindy McCuen has coordinated thousands of fiscal
3notes, reviewed and formatted countless bill analyses and
4memos, and drafted numerous state budgets; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Cindy McCuen is led by her intuition, patience,
6and dedication; she has served as a mentor, a leader, and, most
7importantly, a friend; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Throughout her long career with the legislature,
9Cindy McCuen has served under the guidance of Speaker William
10A. Redmond and Speaker Michael J. Madigan, Chiefs of Staff Gary
11LaPaille, Tim Mapes, and Jessica Basham, and
12Research/Appropriations Staff Directors Jim Andrews, Ralph
13Nickell, Bill Foster, Bob Carter, Bill Holland, Veronica Lynch,
14Tony Rossi, Terri Coombes, John Lowder, Jessica Basham, and
15Mark Jarmer; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Following her retirement from state government,
17Cindy McCuen is excited for her son's upcoming wedding; she
18plans on traveling and is eager to relax; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Cindy McCuen's legacy of hard work, honesty, and
20devotion to both the government and people of the State of
21Illinois will be fondly remembered by the members of this noble

1body and staff; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we congratulate Cindy McCuen on the occasion of her retirement,
5thank her for her many years of committed service to the
6Illinois General Assembly and the people of the State of
7Illinois, and wish her many happy and healthy retirement years;
8and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to Cindy McCuen as a symbol of our esteem and
11respect.
