SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Michael Charles "Mike" Kerner of Arcola,
4who passed away on November 26, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mike Kerner was born in Newton to Neil and Grace
6(Maxwell) Kerner on September 9, 1951; he graduated from
7Eastern Illinois University, where he played baseball for four
8years as a third baseman and served as captain; he married
9Patricia Kleiss in Decatur on June 30, 1973; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Mike Kerner worked his entire career with S&K; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Mike Kerner played second base with the 1978
12National Fast Pitch Champion S&K team; he was inducted into the
13Illinois Fast Pitch Hall of Fame, both as an individual and
14team member; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Mike Kerner was a member of St. John the Baptist
16Catholic Church, the Kaskaskia Country Club, where he served on
17the board, and the Newton Knights of Columbus; he served with
18the Arcola Fire Protection District from 1997 to 2015; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Mike Kerner enjoyed golfing and hunting and was an
20all-round sportsman; he loved all sports; he announced Arcola

1High School basketball games for many years, worked the "chain
2gang" at Arcola football games, and was the Arcola Summer
3Recreation President; most of all, he loved being with his
4family, especially his grandchildren; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mike Kerner was preceded in death by his parents;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mike Kerner is survived by his wife, Pat; his
8children, Julie (Grant) Carpenter and Bob Kerner; his
9grandchildren, Oliver Neil and Audrey Sara Carpenter; his
10brother, Jerome Kerner; and his sister, Rita Kerner; therefore,
11be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Michael Charles "Mike" Kerner, and extend our sincere
15condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
16him; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Mike Kerner as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
